The Troutville Volunteer Fire Department maintains specialized technical rescue capabilities to safely and effectively respond to complex and high-risk emergency situations. These capabilities are designed to address incidents that require advanced skills, specialized equipment, and coordinated operations beyond standard fire suppression.
Department members are trained in vehicle and machinery extrication, including stabilization, disentanglement, and patient packaging techniques for motor vehicle crashes and heavy equipment incidents. The department is also prepared to assist with rope rescue operations involving low- to moderate-angle environments, providing safe access, victim removal, and secure lowering or raising systems when needed. We also maintain water rescue capabilities in the form of powered and paddle watercraft as well as wet/dry suits and Personal Flotation Devices.

Additional technical rescue competencies include structural stabilization, lift-and-move operations, and support functions during confined space or trench-related incidents in coordination with regional response partners. Emphasis is placed on scene safety, hazard assessment, and integration within the Incident Command System to ensure efficient, organized operations. Many TVFD members are also on the roster of the Botetourt County Special Operations Team (SOT).
Through ongoing training, equipment maintenance, and strong mutual aid partnerships, the Troutville Volunteer Fire Department sustains a reliable technical rescue capability—enhancing its ability to protect lives in complex and challenging emergency scenarios.
