We have a crew on the scene in Botetourt County, where 8,500 gallons of fuel is burning right now after a tanker ran off the road this morning. The driver is out of the truck. Both directions of Route 220 are blocked near Fincastle. More info: https://10.wsls.com/2X8wtXP

Engine 2, Brush 2, and Tanker 2 are operating on scene at the 2700 block of Botetourt Rd in Fincastle for a fuel tanker truck that has left the road, ruptured its trailer and caught fire. The driver is out of the vehicle, but the estimated 8500 gallons of fuel has started to burn, flowing downhill and threatening structures in the area. 220 is shut down in both directions for non-emergency vehicles. Please avoid the area if possible.

UPDATE: Only one structure (a barn) was threatened and had minimal involvement and the fuel fire has died down. The main concerns now are containing fuel that has gotten into a nearby creek and an 8' culvert pipe under northbound Rt 220 that melted - causing the road and soil to become unstable, making it impassable.

Over 30 fire/EMS personnel from 5 different departments across Botetourt County participated in training hosted at the Fincastle firehouse last night. The subject was vehicle extrication; topics covered were stabilization, building cribbing towers, lifting with air bags, and basic extraction tactics with hydraulic and battery powered tools. For roughly 3½ hours, volunteers and paid staff sharpened their skills as well as passing on their knowledge to younger department members. A good time was had by all. ... See MoreSee Less
